“A great story, well-written with terrific characters.”
![]()
“Small Blue Thing will appeal to supernatural romance fans yes, but I do hope it is not “shelved” as just that. With an unusual storyline, some great characters and enchanting, beautiful London at its core, it is simply a great story.”
“S.C. Ransom has written a beautifully descriptive tale that grips you from start to finish.”
“I thought this book was brilliant and… unlike anything else in the paranormal YA genre at the moment. I loved the combination of a fascinating mystery, ghostly going-ons, a generous helping of intrigue and a strong romantic thread running throughout. The ending was most definitely jaw-dropping and has left me in a state of high anticipation for what’s going to come next.”

Hi Maki,
Well, Scattering Like Light is out now, so depending on where you live (some countries have a later date) you should be able to get it and put yourself out of your suspense!
I couldn’t possibly say what happens.
Sue

Hi,
I can’t say too much about it at the moment, but it’s another one based in London, with teenage girls and the odd hunk! No Dirges or other sorts of ghosts this time though.

I loved Small Blue Thing and I’ve started reading perfectly reflected!
I’ve done a review for it here: http://baawisdombooks.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/bbc-small-blue-thing.html
What a fantastic review – I tried to write a comment on your blog but I didn’t have the right ID, so I shall have to say thank you here instead!
You also made the 200th comment on the site, so thank you for that too!
Sue
Your welcome, and I’m the 200th commenter? Wow!
when i read the small blue thing i feal as if i’m Alex, i feal a strong conection to her unlike i do with most book charectors. This book made me smaile, cry even a little nevous, it made me dream bigger and see more than meets the eyes. I couldn’t take my eyes off it. Although Catherine disapointed me with her lack of charector and description it was well writen except that it keeps repeating one sentance. If your looking for a out of this world romance read the small blue thing.
My favourate book ever!
I love Small Blue Thing and Perfectly Reflected. Just started reading Scattering like light! Just after reading the first page I was glued to the book. I wish there was another one after this one and I really hope that the books get made into a movie.

i love the small blue thing and have read all three! I wish i could read them forever and ever!!!
Dear Sue,
I wasnt really into reading these past couple of years, cos it was hard to find a good book with out getting bored and not finishing it, but when my friend and I were in a book shop she found your book ‘small blue thing’ and though I might like it. I started reading a chapter every night, sometime i would read a couple of chapters a night cos I just couldnt wait. I feel inlove with the book. Its so detailed, amazing intense and so emotional! The way that Alex and Callum are so connected with eachother and so inlove with eachachother. It made me cry a couple of times. Especially when [edited to remove spoilers!] I cant wait to read the second book! This so far is my favorite book ever, and I love your work, I hope one day to meet you and that you could come to my school in New Zealand! like the others I would absolutely love it if you make this book into a movie. Even though everthing is so detailed in the book I would love to see everthing come to life! I can’t wait to read the second book ‘Perfectly Reflected’
From Mikayla
Wo! I’m only young but I loved your books! Callum was sooo enigmatic and Cathrine was *****, ***** and very *****. Hope For a film!
Hi Lizz, being young is perfect – I wrote them for my daughter’s 12th birthday, but people from 10 – 75 seem to be enjoying them. Sorry I had to edit your comments. I don’t want people who haven’t read it knowing too much about the characters!
i think there should definately be a film!!! My favourite book in my bookcase!! I read it everynight and couldnt put it down! Alex really relates to me as animal loving!
Also this week I have a test on a review of a book! I chose this one to write about!
I wrote the interview for Small Blue Thing on my blog- check it out!!

Bought the first book at a school book fair, found it totally engrossing! Ordered second book immediately and had to wait (impatiently) for publication.Again I have been looking forward to number three which I am about to start tonight-can’t wait!Only complaint I have is that it’s the last!! Many CONGRATULATIONS to you.I realise your books are intended for teenagers, maybe you should consider a wider audience! Best wishes from a 55 year old (teenager at heart!)
Hi Sandie,
Thank you – I think there are quite a few secret older readers, so you are not alone! Do let me know what you think of Scattering Like Light.
Sue
Dear Sue,
I have just finished reading all three books and have officially fallen in love (with both your books and Callum!)
When I first heard about the book and picked up that it was a fantasy romance and was a bit disappointed as that’s what every book has been about since Twilight was let out! But I was totally wrong! I was totally wrong! (I guess the saying “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover” knows what it’s talking about!) The first book was absolutely amazing and I just couldn’t wait to read on. I got my mum to pre-order them!
I really hope (on both your behalf and mine) that they get turned into a movie!
Please carry on writing!
From, Grace England
Hey Sue
I have read both Small Blue Thing and Perfectly Reflected and they are the best books I have read so far (I have been a huge book worm lately) and I could not put both books down because I wanted to know what was going to happen next!! Anyway I just wanted to know when Scattering Like Light will come out in Australia, I am very excited to read it and can’t wait till it comes out over here. Thank you and I hope you will write more books.
Jess
P.s I am really hoping that the books will be made into a movie
Hi Sue!
I am currently reading Small Blue Thing and have got Perfectly Reflected waiting for me on my bookshelf to follow it. The braclet looks beautiful and I wouldn’t mind one for myself! I think Alex and Callum are great characters and i can picture them in my mine. Keep writing, I think your talent in unique! X
Hiya have just read Small Blue Thing and and am getting Perfectly Reflected for Christmas. I think a film should be made of this as it could be the next Twilight.
Please Consider!
Georgia
Hi Georgia,
I would love for it to be made into a flm, but it’s not up to me, sadly! Keep getting your friends to like it on Facebook and maybe we can persuade the movie guys!
I hope that you enjoy Perfectly Reflected at Christmas, and don’t forget that Scattering Like Light is out on the 2nd January (in the UK). Not long now.
Sue
Hello Sue,
I just wanted to say how much my daughter has enjoyed your first two books, she has been captivated from start to finish and could not put your books down. She has contacted you previously suggesting a film should be made and has told everyone they should read them! So lovely to hear your story of how the first book was a present for your daughter but eventually reached publishing.
Please keep writing, I know my daughter will be anxiously awaiting your next books.
Kindest Regards,
Julie C

Hi Anna,
I’m glad you like Callum. I tried to make him exactly the sort of boy that my daughter would like. The bracelet is lovely – I’m allowed to take it to school visits at the moment, but in the New Year I think that it is going to be given away in a competition, so keep checking here and one day it could be yours!

I’m so pleased you like it. If you can’t find Perfectly Reflected in the stores (I’m not sure which country you are in) you can always buy it online. Most of the big online retailers will have it. Let me know what you think!
Sue
Hi Sue,
It is so awesome that i can finish reading the book in one day. I hope that the rest of the book will be as awesome as he first one..
I absolutely enjoyed Small Blue Thing so much. You described Callum so detailedly that i think i am falling in love with him. This book is so romantic and i really like how you described the way Alex and Callum gave their love for each other. I had just read Small Blue Thing and i was hoping that the next book, Perfectly Reflected and Scattering like Light (if i am not wrong) to be more romantic
Thankj you
p.s make them more romantic okay? I want the feeling of romance to be present in the rest of the book. I hope you will write other romance books too! i am willing to buy it! I love you a lot!

From:Khaliesah
Hi Khaliesah,
Wow, I hope that you do find the next two romantic enough. They are done so I can’t change them now, but there’s lots of romance and action in both of them, I promise. Let me know what you think.
Sue
Hi Sue

Ever since i finished the book, i have been raving to my family about how good it is. Its definatly a five star book to me!!!!
Jess
when is your last book coming out?
Hi Amanda,
The last book, Scattering Like Light, is all done. In fact, I was sent a copy yesterday to check before it goes to print. It will be coming out in early January which seems like a long wait from now!
Sue
S.c.ranson came to my school to talk to us about her book and I thought it sounded amazing so I went to waterstones to buy it yesterday and I have got over half way through it’s great I love reading thx for writing a great book I already have to lend it to my BFFs thx so much u are a fab writer thx!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Olivia,
I’m glad you liked the talk, and I hope you got one of the signed books from Waterstones! Hopefully I’ll be able to come back and talk to you all again when the final book comes out in the New Year. Enjoy the rest of the book,
Sue
I love the way how you wrote the book “Small blue thing” I’am now totally now obsessed with it and looking forward into reading the other books in the series.
Small Blue Thing is a beautiful book, i loved every bit of it and cant wait for the next one.
hi, im turning 19 this year and Even though i’m suppose to be loving adult books im obsessed with fantasy and i have to say this book is absolutely addictive! The fact the story hasnt ended makes me restless and wanting the next book to come out! What i wanted to ask was how many more books/sequels will the small blue thing have and in the end does callum become human? or if thats giving away too much, does alex and callum have a happily ever after?
Thanks!
Hi Rebecca,
I couldn’t possibly tell you if there is a happily ever after, but by the end of Scattering Like Light (book 3) all your questions will be answered, I promise!
Sue
I love these books, and the way you’ve written them, you’ve illustrated the characters so perfectly, so that they become real living people in your hearts and minds.
when you read this book, you so become into the story that you can’t resit putting it down until you’ve turned the final page.
i love your books so much, they really inspire me with my own writing
keep on believing
Dear Sue,
I bought small blue thing 1 week ago and I’m in chapter ‘stealing’, well so far i think the first book is amazing! You described Callum so good looking that i think i fell in love with him! Thank You!
PS- What did your daughter say when she found out about the second book?
Hi,
She was delighted – in fact she was begging me to write the second one from the moment she finished the first one. She was the first person to read Perfectly Reflected, and when it’s all done, she’ll be the first one to read the final book too.
I hope you like them all!
Sue
hi there

HI,
Thanks for commenting – i’m so glad you like it, and I hope you’ll like Perfectly Reflected too. Only one more day to wait: on Thursday you can read it and find out what happens next.
Let me know what you think!
Sue
Sue,
I love this book so much and i am definetly entriged as to where you get your ideas. I really cant wait for the next books to be published
will you give us an idea as to what they are about???
Lucie
x
Hi Lucie,
I’m afraid I can’t tell you too much more about the next books without giving away the plot. I can tell you that Alex has a terrible time, but that’s about it!
There’s only a few weeks to wait now – book two, Perfectly Reflected, comes out on the 2nd June. It looks beautiful and I hope you’ll tell me what you think.
Sue
Dear Sue,
This book is amazing where did you get all this fascinating ideas from?
PS- Is this book based on a true life story?
Hi Julia,
I guess I just have an over-active imagination. I see things around me and think “What would happen if….”and that’s what I did with the books. Everything is based on real life, all the places and how I think people might react, all except the Dirges! I hope you liked them.
Sue
I absolutly loved the book, it was great!
Sue where did you get your ideas from for the dirges? The whole book was very imaginative and has inspired me to read and write more.
I don’t often find a good book or read much for that matter, but i couldn’t put ‘small blue thing’ down.
I can’t wait for the next two books to come out. I even told my grandma about the book and she found it very exiting and as i told her the story again i felt this tingling sensation all over. 5 stars for sure!
I have read that you have been going around schools; would it be possible for you to visit mine?
It would be amazing!
Thank you sue for writting such a good book!
From amy
Hi Amy,
I made up the Dirges because I didn’t want to have to obey the rules that people already know about vampires and zombies or whatever. I decided that if I made up my own group I could have them behave exactly as I want them too – much more fun! I did have to write a long list of the things that they do, and the rules which govern them, so that I could be consistent.
I hope that you like the next book as well!
I’m trying to visit more schools this term, so you never know – I might turn up one day.
Sue
Thank you Sue!
I will look foward too it
From
Amy
Dear Sue,
I get through about a book a day but ‘Small Blue Thing’ left me in utter awe, amazement and inspiration. My lifetime ambition is to be a writer and I think its brilliant you wrote the majority of your book on your blackberry, and for your daughter’s birthday too! That would be the most fantastic present!
I recently went on an arvon creative writing 5 day course with some girls from my school and was inspired to start writing what i (ambitiously) hope will be published one day. I have already written 50 pages of it but have been in such a trance since reading your book I haven’t taken a look at it in days!
Can you say anything about either of your next two books, apart from when they will be published?I just got off the phone with my best friend, raving about the book to her.
What I really respect and admire about your book is the way you manage to keep things so vivid, down to the last detail. It tops any of the twilight books by miles!
I was totally and utterly mezmerised by your book, so good luck with writing- you can guarantee there’s a sea of fan bursting to read ‘Perfectly Reflected’ when it comes out!
Tell your daughter Ellie (although she definitely already knows) that she received probably one of the best birthday presents ever possible!#
Do you visit schools a lot? Would it be possible for you to come to mine?
From your number one fan,
x
Emily
Hi Emily,
Thanks so much for writing! I can’t tell you too much about the next two books without giving away spoilers, but I can tell you that Alex has a pretty tough time. Ellie is the only one who has read it (apart from the editor of course), and she says that it’s better than the first one. She’s a bit biased though – you’ll just have to let me know what you think too.
We are organising school visits at the moment, so I can email your school and see if they are interested. You never know!
Sue
I can’t explain how amazing this book is! Had me gripped while on holiday. Sue: You really know how to write! It was so good. It’s as if you’re in the story with Alex and Callum. It’s so magical and it’s inspiring me so much. Do you have any tips on writing? :]
Thanks,
Georgie x
10.
Hi Georgie,
To write well you need to read *lots*! Then write about something you know (places etc) and have a particular set of readers in mind (I wrote Small Blue Thing for my daughter Ellie). Don’t be afraid to experiment – write lots of different things and find what suits you best. Let us know how you get on!
Sue
Thanks Sue!
Yes, I love reading – but will definitely read more.
I’ll have a go at a few stories maybe or long stories?!
Thanks so much again for writing back – it has really helped me!
I’ve tried jotting down a few ideas for stories, but I can’t find one that might be very good? I will have a good go at some more and tell you how I get on, if that’s okay?
Thank you,
Georgie x
i dont normal read at night but last night i was up until 11o’clock and i read 150 pages . Already i have had to make a list of friends who want to read it. i cant wait until the second one comes out . at school loads of people have got it and sometimes i forget to anserw my name in the register because ive got my noes in the book . surely im the youngest reader to read it beacuse im only 10.
Hi Hannah,
I’m so glad you are enjoying it – don’t get in trouble at school though!
All the best,
Sue
this such a good book, i love the romance and the way she sees callum at the school trip and at night!!! i am usually not into books but this one is the one for me!!!!!
Wonderful book, Sue – I was absolutely captivated and can’t wait for the rest of the series! We’ve spotted it in several Waterstones and in the school book fair leaflet, and have bought extra copies to pass on to friends as I don’t want to let go of my own! The ideas are marvellous – the hidden River Fleet, the lost souls in St Paul’s….. Keep up the good work! Katie
this book pulls all the right strings, its like nothing I’ve ever read i cant wait for the next one .I’m amazed that someone with so much talent isn’t as well known.
I’m also rating the book 5 star from my last comment!
Dear Sue,
On February 4th you came to visit your old school for a talk with some pupils. The talk was inspiring! I have read the book- i spent all night reading it! I was also amazed that i got to hold the bracelet from the book cover! Thank you for visting our school and inspiring so many of us to become writers just like you! Good Luck in the future!
Love,
Anna

Wow!! It looks seriously good!!! Im gonna go buy it tommorow
Well done and good luck Sue I’m sure it’s amazing. Tell Ellie I say hi, happy birthday and hope she’s having fun at school xxx
(from what I’ve seen its 5star )
I found Small Blue Thing gripping from start to finish. S.C. Ransom writes very descriptively and the book becomes more gripping with every page that is turned.
It will definitely be popular with teenagers and young adults – S.C. Ransom is very in tune with their world.
I can see Small Blue Thing and the follow up books being runaway bestsellers.
Small Blue Thing definitely comes into my Top Three Books of the Year. I can’t wait to read the next two books. Sue Ransom is very talented if she can write books as good as these. I am sure the next books will be just as good as this one.
All of them are soooooo my favourtie books too
This book is just possibly the most awesome book ever
an extremely good fictional story for teenagers. S. C. Ransom has bucketfuls of talent and heaps of potential. I literally can’t wait for the next two!! Callum is – basically – my idea of the perfect guy – not Rob, thankfully! ‘Small Blue Thing’, hitting the shelves on January 13th, will be highly popular with the teenage audience. Hopefully this book will hit the best-seller lists – if it doesn’t, the next two surely will. Good luck to Sue for the book and I hope all goes well.
